What happened to the CS Professional Advanced Tax Laws paper?

It is no longer a compulsory paper. Under the ICSI New Syllabus 2022 its subject matter moved into Elective 2 as option 7.2, Goods & Services Tax (GST) & Corporate Tax Planning. Students who want a tax specialisation choose that option; those who do not can avoid advanced tax entirely.

Which Elective 2 option do most students pick?

GST & Corporate Tax Planning is the most commonly chosen because it is the most directly useful in practice and overlaps with tax already studied at Executive level. Insolvency and Bankruptcy is the next most popular, helped by its overlap with Paper 6.

Can I choose electives from the same subject area in both groups?

Yes, nothing prevents it - for example Advanced Direct Tax in Elective 1 and GST & Corporate Tax Planning in Elective 2 gives a full tax specialisation. Just be aware that concentrating both electives narrows the breadth of your qualification.

CS Professional Paper 7 - Elective 2

Elective 2 is Paper 7 of Group 2 under the ICSI New Syllabus 2022. You choose one of five options at enrolment. Students who studied the old syllabus should note that the former Advanced Tax Laws paper is no longer compulsory - its subject matter now appears here as option 7.2.

7.4 Banking & Insurance - Laws & Practice - RBI and IRDAI frameworks, banking regulation and insurance law
7.5 Insolvency and Bankruptcy - Law & Practice - the IBC 2016 at depth, CIRP, liquidation and the insolvency professional's role

Choosing well

GST & Corporate Tax Planning is the most commonly chosen and the most transferable to practice, but it demands amendment tracking every session
Insolvency pairs naturally with Paper 6, which already covers IBC - the overlap makes it efficient if you enjoyed that paper
Arbitration and Banking & Insurance are the most self-contained if you want a clean separation from your other papers
