CFA Level 1 2026 — What You're Actually Getting Into
CFA Level 1 is the foundation of the CFA programme administered by CFA Institute (USA). It tests your knowledge of investment tools, financial analysis, and professional ethics across 10 topic areas in a computer-based, multiple-choice format. The exam runs across two 135-minute sessions separated by a short break.
CFA Level 1 is offered four times a year in February, May, August, and November. The next upcoming windows for Indian candidates are August 2026 and November 2026. Registration deadlines are typically 3 months before each exam window — book early to secure your preferred test centre city.
Topic Area Weights (2026 Curriculum)
- Ethical and Professional Standards — 15–20%: The highest-weighted topic. Every CFA candidate underestimates Ethics. A score below 50% in Ethics has historically caused Level 1 failures even with strong performance elsewhere. Read the Standards of Practice Handbook — all of it.
- Quantitative Methods — 6–9%: TVM, statistics, hypothesis testing, regression. Heavy overlap with MBA Finance and FRM Level 1.
- Economics — 6–9%: Micro, macro, and currency exchange rate fundamentals.
- Financial Statement Analysis — 11–14%: Income statement, balance sheet, cash flow — plus ratio analysis, inventory methods, and pension accounting under IFRS vs GAAP. One of the most time-intensive topics for non-accountants.
- Corporate Issuers — 6–9%: Capital structure, working capital, ESG integration in corporate finance.
- Equity Investments — 10–12%: Market structures, index construction, equity valuation basics (DDM, P/E, EV multiples).
- Fixed Income — 10–12%: Bond pricing, duration, convexity, yield curve analysis, credit risk basics.
- Derivatives — 5–8%: Options, futures, forwards, swaps — pricing and risk management basics. Conceptually dense but learnable with the right approach.
- Alternative Investments — 5–8%: PE, hedge funds, real estate, commodities — characteristics and due diligence considerations.
- Portfolio Management and Wealth Planning — 5–8%: MPT, CAPM, asset allocation, IPS basics. Becomes the dominant topic in Level 3.
The 44% Pass Rate — What It Actually Means
CFA Level 1 has a global pass rate of approximately 44% (2025 data). That does not mean it is easy — it means that candidates who prepare seriously and strategically clear it. The most common failure pattern: strong on numerical topics (Quant, Fixed Income) but weak on Ethics. Ethics alone has ended otherwise well-prepared candidates' Level 1 attempts.
300-Hour Study Plan That Works
CFA Institute recommends 300+ hours for Level 1. In practice, candidates with finance backgrounds need 250–300 hours; non-finance candidates need 320–380 hours. Spread across 5–6 months: 90 hours on FSA and Ethics alone. Reserve the final 6 weeks exclusively for question practice — minimum 3,000 practice questions total before exam day.
