Where to start

3 ways to begin your CA journey

Your starting point depends on your education. All routes converge at CA Intermediate and then continue identically.

Foundation Route
After Class 12th

The most common path. Register after Class 10th, appear after your 12th boards (any stream), then clear Foundation, Intermediate and Final.

After Graduation

Graduates/post-graduates skip Foundation and register directly for Intermediate - Commerce 55%, other streams 60%.

CS / CMA Inter-qualified

Candidates who have cleared the Intermediate level of CS (ICSI) or CMA (ICMAI) can also enter directly at CA Intermediate.

Step-by-step roadmap to becoming a CA

Step 1 - Clear CA Foundation

approx. 4 months

The entry level. Register with the Board of Studies after Class 10th and appear after your 12th boards. Study for at least 4 months before the exam, now held multiple times a year.

Step 2 - Pass CA Intermediate

approx. 8 months study

After Foundation (or via Direct Entry after graduation), register for Intermediate. There is an 8-month minimum study period before you can attempt the exams. Six papers are split across two groups.

Step 3 - ICITSS + Practical Training (Articleship)

2 years

Complete ICITSS (a 4-week course on IT & soft skills), then begin 2 years of articleship under a practising CA - real-world experience in audit, taxation and finance. Articleship starts after clearing both Intermediate groups.

Step 4 - Clear the 4 Self-Paced Online Modules

Self-paced

A new-scheme requirement. Four online modules (Sets A, B, C, D) covering technical, elective and multidisciplinary topics. Clear them at your own pace after Intermediate and before the Final exam.

Step 5 - Crack CA Final

The last academic milestone. You become eligible during the last 6 months of articleship. Papers were reduced from 8 to 6 under the new scheme, including an integrated multidisciplinary case-study paper.

Step 6 - Become a Member of ICAI

You're a CA!

Finish your articleship, complete Advanced ICITSS, clear CA Final and apply for ICAI membership. You can now officially use the 'CA' designation and start practising or take up a role in industry.
