CS Professional Paper 9 — Elective Paper (Specialisation)

The Elective Paper is the final paper of CS Professional — a 100-mark exam where you choose one area of specialisation from ICSI's approved elective list. This is your opportunity to develop deep domain expertise in an area aligned with your career goals. Unlike other Professional papers, your elective choice defines your positioning in the market.

Available Elective Specialisations

• Banking Law and Practice — Banking Regulation Act, RBI Act, NPA classification, Basel III/IV framework, digital banking, payments regulation, bank recovery mechanisms (SARFAESI, DRT). Best for: CS aspirants targeting banking sector roles or financial services regulatory compliance.
• Insurance Law and Practice — Insurance Act 1938, IRDAI regulations, life/general/health insurance regulatory framework, reinsurance, Ombudsman mechanism. Best for: CS targeting insurance sector compliance or regulatory work.
• Intellectual Property Rights — Patents Act 1970, Trade Marks Act 1999, Copyright Act 1957, Designs Act 2002, Geographical Indications Act; patent prosecution, trademark registration, IP licensing and assignments. Best for: CS targeting IP practice, technology companies, or pharmaceutical sector.
• Forensic Audit — Fraud examination methodology, financial statement fraud, digital forensics, evidence collection, expert witness, cybercrime investigation. Best for: CS targeting risk and fraud advisory, internal audit leadership, or SFIO-linked work.
• Direct Tax Practice and Procedures — Advanced assessment, appeals, TDS compliance, DTAA application, tax restructuring, tax audit under Section 44AB. Best for: CS targeting tax practice or working with CA firms in tax advisory.
• Labour Laws and Practice — The four Labour Codes (Wages, Industrial Relations, Social Security, Occupational Safety), Industrial Disputes Act, Shops & Establishments, EPFO/ESIC compliance. Best for: CS targeting HR-legal, manufacturing sector, or multi-state compliance roles.
• Valuations — SEBI-registered Valuer framework, valuation for mergers, fairness opinions, ESOP valuation, insolvency valuation, IBBI Valuation Standards. Best for: CS targeting M&A advisory, restructuring practice, or IBBI Registered Valuer certification.
• IRDAI — Detailed insurance regulatory framework (available as a dedicated elective for those wanting deeper insurance expertise than the Insurance Law paper).
• CSR — Section 135 in depth, CSR policy design, impact measurement, CSR reporting standards, SEBI BRSR linkage. Best for: CS targeting ESG, sustainability roles, or social impact organisations.

How to Choose Your Elective

Choose based on your Articleship experience and target industry, not based on perceived difficulty. Every elective is approximately equally demanding — the "easier" elective is always the one you know best from practical exposure. If your Articleship was at a bank or NBFC, Banking Law is your natural choice. If you worked with a patent firm, IPR is the logical pick. The elective you know from practice is the elective where you can write authoritative, experience-grounded answers.
