CS Professional Paper 8 — Multidisciplinary Case Studies
Multidisciplinary Case Studies is the only open book examination in the CS Professional programme — and in some ways the most demanding one. The 100-mark exam presents 2–3 comprehensive case scenarios that require you to simultaneously apply knowledge from governance, tax, restructuring, securities law, and corporate law. Being open book does not make this easier — it makes the standard of expected analysis higher.
What ICSI Tests in Paper 8
ICSI designs case scenarios around realistic corporate situations — a company planning an IPO while facing an NCLT scheme of arrangement, or a multinational group undergoing a cross-border restructuring with GAAR implications and IBC exposure from a subsidiary in default. You must:
- Identify all legal, compliance, regulatory, and governance issues embedded in the scenario
- Apply the correct legal provision, regulation, or standard to each identified issue
- Advise the Board, management, or specific stakeholder as directed in the question
- Reconcile conflicts where two provisions or regulations appear to apply simultaneously
Skills Paper 8 Develops
- Issue spotting — Identifying every legal and compliance trigger in a complex fact pattern
- Prioritisation — In a 3-hour exam with an extensive fact scenario, knowing which issues to address in what depth
- Cross-module linkage — A single transaction (e.g., a stressed company's merger with a solvent acquirer) triggers Companies Act provisions, IBC considerations, SEBI SAST if either is listed, and tax implications — your answer must cover all dimensions
- Professional judgement — Recommending a course of action with reasoned justification, not just stating the law
Open Book Strategy
Bring structured notes (not your entire textbook) — you need to find provisions quickly, not read chapters during the exam. Create a personal quick-reference booklet with key section numbers, regulatory thresholds, timelines, and the most commonly cross-referenced provisions across modules. The candidates who score highest in Paper 8 are those who spend the exam analysing and advising — not searching for provisions they should have already known.
