3 ways to begin your CMA journey

Your starting point depends on your education. All routes converge at CMA Intermediate and then continue identically.

Foundation Route
After Class 12th

The most common path. Register after Class 10th, appear after your 12th boards (any stream), then clear Foundation, Intermediate and Final.

After Graduation

Graduates in any discipline (except Fine Arts) skip Foundation and register directly for CMA Intermediate.

Step-by-step roadmap to becoming a CMA

Step 1 - Clear CMA Foundation

approx. 4 months

The entry level. Register with ICMAI after Class 10th and appear after your 12th boards. Foundation has four papers covering accounting, business laws, economics and business mathematics.

Pass mark: 40% in each paper and 50% overall aggregate. Foundation is held twice a year (June & December).

Step 2 - Pass CMA Intermediate

After Foundation (or via Direct Entry after graduation), register for Intermediate. Eight papers across two groups cover cost accounting, taxation, financial management and management accounting.

Step 3 - Practical & Skill Training

15 months+

Complete the mandatory communication & soft-skills and computer training, then practical training in industry or under a practising Cost Accountant - hands-on costing, budgeting and finance experience. A minimum of 15 months is required before membership, extending up to about 3 years for candidates without prior relevant work experience.

Practical training runs alongside the Final stage and is mandatory before membership. The 15-month minimum applies to those with approved prior work experience; for others the full training can run up to about 3 years. A monthly stipend usually applies.

Step 4 - Crack CMA Final

The last academic milestone. Eight papers across two groups (including one elective) covering strategic cost management, corporate financial reporting, cost audit, tax laws and corporate laws.

Step 5 - Become an ACMA Member of ICMAI

You're a CMA!

Finish your practical training, clear CMA Final and apply for Associate membership (ACMA) of ICMAI. You can now officially use the 'CMA' designation and practise independently or join the corporate world.
