Quick answer

To become a CS in India, clear the three ICSI stages - CSEET → Executive → Professional - and complete 21 months of practical training. School-leavers join after 12th via CSEET; graduates and CA/CMA final-pass candidates skip CSEET through Direct Entry. Start to finish, it takes roughly 3-3.5 years after Class 12th.

Your starting point depends on your education. All routes converge at the CS Executive programme and then continue identically.

Step-by-step roadmap to becoming a CS

Step 1 - Clear CSEET

approx. 2-3 months prep

The entry gateway. CSEET (Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test) is a computer-based test you can take after your Class 12th boards. Graduates and CA/CMA final-pass candidates are exempt and can skip straight to Executive.

Pass mark: 40% in each part and 50% in aggregate. CSEET is held four times a year.

Step 2 - Pass CS Executive

approx. 8-9 months study

Register for the Executive programme after CSEET (or directly, if you are a graduate). Seven papers across two groups cover company law, securities law, taxation and accounting. A minimum study period applies before you can attempt the exams.

You can attempt one group at a time or both groups together.

Step 3 - Practical Training

21 months

After clearing Executive, register for practical training under a company or a practising Company Secretary - real, hands-on experience in secretarial, compliance and governance work. Training runs alongside your Professional studies.

ICSI also requires skill-development / pre-membership modules. A monthly stipend usually applies.

Step 4 - Clear CS Professional

Final stage

The last academic milestone. Seven papers across two groups (including elective specialisation papers) covering governance, drafting, corporate restructuring, insolvency and strategic management.

Pass mark: 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate per group.

Step 5 - Become an ACS Member of ICSI

You're a CS!

Finish your practical training, clear the Professional programme and apply for Associate membership (ACS) of ICSI. You can now officially use the 'CS' designation and practise independently or join the corporate world.
